How Target and Home Depot Made IT Security a Hot Career for 2015

Unless you’ve been living abroad for the past year, chances are you’ve heard about the high profile security breaches causing companies such as, Target, Home Depot and Michaels, to shine a brighter spotlight on IT security this past year. While protecting sensitive data and privacy has always been at the top of CIOs priority lists, the growth of cyber threats has led many organizations to make protecting consumer information and financial data an even greater focus. Consider that North America received 11 percent more incidents of cyber security breaches in 2014 than the year before.

In fact, Gartner predicts that IT security will reach $76.9 billion in 2015. And, a recent article in Infoworld reported 46 percent of IT leaders will invest more in intrusion prevention and virus protection this year.

This trend is fueling a growing demand for a wide range of IT security professionals, particularly as we see more convergence between data-privacy and security. The influx of mobile devices, social media utilization, and big data are making it more challenging to protect against security breaches, while personal and professional information is getting more difficult to separate.

IT professionals who can understand security-related data that’s being mined from multiple sources will be in high demand for years to come. Also enjoying promising career prospects are IT security workers with the business acumen to understand business-prioritized risks, ability to discern isolated issues from patterns, and communicate these risks in an effective way.

More in-demand skills next year will be Chief Information Security Officers (CISO), network security engineers, security administrators, and systems security analyst. For IT workers serious about boosting career prospects and specializing in security, a solid first step is to gain certifications such as, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) and Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP). VisionIT has an established partnership with The Learning Center (TLC), one of the top IT certification programs in the nation. TLC offers a range of ISC2 Cyber Security trainings and certifications among others.

2015 Will be Merry and Bright for IT Professionals

All the career dreams of IT professionals may come true in 2015, as the year ends with strong IT hiring activity and prospects for IT contractors look merry and bright. Speaking of bright, the IT sector was a bright spot in November’s labor report which added 321,000 jobs overall to the economy. The IT industry added 7,000 within management and technical consulting services, and 7,000 more in the computer systems design and related services. IT employment is now at 4.703 million, a 3.27 percent increase compared to this time last year.

Also on the upswing is the use of contractors by employers and a growing desire among workers to choose contracting or freelancing. Today, freelancers and contractors make up 34 percent of the U.S. workforce. Meanwhile, 48 percent of CIOs will add more contractors than employees in 2015. As demand for skilled and specialized IT talent surges, companies are turning to staffing partners to hire contractors which allows them more flexibility. For the IT professional, pursuing contract work is an excellent way to keep learning the latest, most innovative IT skills through a range of opportunities.

In addition, with remote and virtual employees becoming more commonplace, younger generations have more desire to choose freelancing or contracting as a career path. A 2013 study by ODesk and Millennial Branding, found that 61 percent of Gen Y workers with “regular” jobs say they will, or probably will, quit their regular jobs within two years in favor of flexible options. The report goes on to say many Gen Y professionals now consider contracting or consulting as their career, not just a stepping stone in their job hunt.

VISIONIT RANKED 14TH LARGEST MINORITY-OWNED BUSINESS IN MICHIGAN BY CRAIN’S DETROIT BUSINESS

Detroit, MI – September 15, 2014 – VisionIT, a global leader in mobility solutions, IT managed services and talent management, today announced its ranking as Michigan’s 14th largest minority-owned business as compiled by Crain’s Detroit Business magazine. The 2014 list was compiled based on 2013 revenues of minority-owned businesses headquartered throughout Michigan.

VisionIT established its business in Detroit, Michigan in 1997, and since that time has grown to be one of the largest employers and revenue-generating enterprises in the state. The company’s success extends globally, having been included among the country’s largest and fastest-growing minority-owned businesses over the past several years.

“We are thrilled to be recognized by Crain’s for our hard-earned revenue and operational growth over the past year, and are honored to be included among many of Michigan’s leading organizations,” said David Segura, CEO and founder of VisionIT. “We had a vision many years ago to make Detroit, Michigan an innovative technology hub and we are now living in a time where the State of Michigan and Detroit is receiving this kind of recognition.”

Over the past year, VisionIT has focused significant efforts and resources towards global expansion, in response to client needs. Several of the company’s Fortune 500 customers have requested IT staffing and managed services support from VisionIT to support their overseas operations. The company recently expanded into Brazil, U.K. France, Italy and Canada.

“We are finding more customers moving away from engaging a single IT outsourcing partner, instead moving to a more flexible model in which they are leveraging key IT partners who have the size and scale, but also specialization in specific areas of IT,” said Segura. “Our Fortune 500 clients are increasingly turning to us for innovative mobility solutions, as well as to run mission-critical applications and network operations.”
